Somehow you have decided to take some time off work and your life to pack a backpack and hike for anywhere from 5 to 60 days.
What in the world made this seem like a good idea? Read a book? See a movie? Talk to friends or family who have done something similar?
In ancient times, most walked a Camino for religious reasons. Often as an act of penance, at other times a quest of personal pilgrimage. Over the centuries the multitude of reasons to accept the challenge of a Camino has changed dramatically. These days many people choose to walk a Camino as an act of physical endurance as well as an exercise in mental development. Others see it as an act of personal growth or a chance to examine their lives in a very special way. Some still walk as an act of religious pilgrimage and for those who do it can be a revelatory experience.
Some choose to walk, others ride bicycles, and some even ride horses. There are many tour companies that offer daily walking tours with comfortable hotels in the evenings to relax in. It is important to know that everyone who sets out on a Camino is worthy of everyone’s respect and support. No pilgrim is above another and our attitudes toward others make a dramatic impact on the Camino experience.
Whatever the reason, be it physical, spiritual or social, it is important to note that everyone has a very personal reason to attempt a Camino and for the most part all of them are equally valid. Some know why on the first day, some don't know till the last day. It is something deep inside that makes all the pain, frustration, and doubt wildly insignificant compared to the glory of friends, sights, and amazing times on the trail.
We hope you find your reason. With luck you will get to know yourself and the world just a little better.
